What color is your antifreeze and how often should it be changed?

Today’s automobiles are unsurpassed for performance and efficiency. Each vehicle manufacture has different specification requirements and they designate their coolants with a color-coding. They also have recommended maintenance intervals when the coolant needs to be inspected or checked for strength and acidity as well as replacement schedule.

The antifreeze can be green, gold, pink, or blue depending on the vehicle manufacture. Antifreeze in your car does wear out and needs to be replaced at regular intervals. If your antifreeze is green its two years or every 45,000 miles. Ford Gold Antifreeze or coolant is 60 months or 100,000 miles. GM’s pink DEX COOL is also a 5 year service interval.

Do you know that there are two specific maintenance schedules for your car based on your driving habits? One is based on what is considered normal driving, while the other is considered severe driving conditions. Do you know where to find the definition of severe driving conditions?

Chrysler defines severe driving conditions as more than 50% of vehicle operation in stop and go traffic where the vehicle is driven regularly for more than 45 minutes of continuous operation, such as heavy city or in construction zone traffic. Police, taxi, limousine, commercial type operation, and trailer towing where the vehicle is driven regularly for more than 45 minutes of continuous operation.

Ford and GM define severe driving conditions as city driving where most trips are less than 5 miles. This is particularly important when outside temperatures are below freezing. Most trips include extensive idling such as frequent driving in stop and go traffic, you frequently tow a trailer or use a carrier on top of your vehicle, or the vehicle is used for delivery service, police, taxi or other commercial application. Here’s what it comes down to. As you pull away from the drive through window of your favorite coffee house trying to get the first sip of that morning picker upper and you scald your mouth its comforting to know it will heal quickly. However, if as you are pulling away from the drive up window you get cut off and have to hit the brakes quickly, spill the coffee “you know where” because you were holding it between your legs, the outcome will not be as favorable. Burns “there” can mean seriously reduced social activities, with discomfort until skin can grow back. So, let’s use our cup holders, or even better, go into your favorite coffee house and enjoy the cup with a friend. This will prevent the hazards of trying to drink hot coffee while driving. Bob Neff
